A practical guide for Almaty
Air purifier for an apartment in Almaty: how to reduce smog and PM2.5 exposure
Simply switching on an air purifier is not enough during a smog episode. Results depend on outdoor air quality, room leakage, purifier capacity, filter condition and ventilation timing.
Quick answer: what to do on a severe-smog day
- Check current outdoor air-quality data rather than relying on visibility alone.
- When PM2.5 is high, close street-facing windows and doors unless the room becomes dangerously hot or stuffy.
- Choose one room where your household spends the most time and run a correctly sized purifier there.
- Avoid adding particles indoors: postpone smoking, candles, high-heat frying and vacuuming without a HEPA-filtered vacuum.
- When outdoor air improves, ventilate briefly because an air purifier does not remove CO2.
What PM2.5 is and why it matters
PM2.5 refers to airborne particles up to 2.5 micrometres in diameter. These particles can penetrate deep into the respiratory system. The World Health Organization's 2021 guideline values are 5 µg/m³ as an annual mean and 15 µg/m³ as a 24-hour mean. These are population-health guidelines, not a sharp line at which air instantly changes from safe to dangerous.
Smog is not a single substance. It may contain particles and gaseous pollutants, so a lower indoor PM2.5 reading does not prove that every component of pollution has been removed.
Where to check air quality in Almaty
Use official monitoring information and look at the trend over several hours. Almaty monitoring covers PM2.5 and other pollutants. A consumer sensor inside a purifier is useful for tracking changes in a room, but it is not a substitute for an official monitoring station: placement, humidity, cooking and aerosols can affect its reading.
Practical test: compare outdoor and indoor readings. If indoor PM2.5 steadily falls after the windows are closed and the purifier is turned on, the setup is working. If it does not, check for open windows, blocked airflow, insufficient fan speed and an overloaded filter.
How to size a purifier: calculate CADR, not just floor area
A claim such as “up to 60 m²” does not tell you how often the air in your room will be cleaned. Use room volume:
required CADR = floor area × ceiling height × desired air changes per hour.
| Room | Volume at 2.7 m ceiling | CADR for 4 changes/h | CADR for 5 changes/h |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 m² | 40.5 m³ | 162 m³/h | 203 m³/h |
| 20 m² | 54 m³ | 216 m³/h | 270 m³/h |
| 30 m² | 81 m³ | 324 m³/h | 405 m³/h |
This is an estimate. Furniture, leakage, open doors and a loaded filter reduce real-world performance. One purifier will not normally clean several closed rooms equally.
Which filtration matters during smog
- A pre-filter captures larger dust, hair and fibres and protects downstream filters.
- HEPA filtration addresses fine airborne particles, including PM2.5.
- Activated carbon is used for some odours and gaseous compounds, but a household carbon layer does not guarantee removal of every gas in smog.
Use particle-filtration mode without ozonation while a room is occupied. Ozone is a respiratory irritant; use an ozonation function only as instructed, with no people, animals or plants present, and ventilate afterwards.
How to place and run the purifier
- Do not obstruct airflow. Leave space around air inlets and outlets; do not hide the unit behind a curtain or sofa.
- Start at a high speed. Once PM2.5 falls, switch to automatic or quiet mode if needed.
- Close the room door when creating one cleaner zone during a pollution peak.
- Do not position the sensor beside a window, cooker or directly in the clean-air jet: it will represent only that spot.
- Check the filter. Service life depends on pollutant load. More noise, weak airflow, odour or persistently worse results are reasons to inspect it according to the manual.
When to open windows
An air purifier recirculates and filters indoor air; it does not provide ventilation or remove accumulated carbon dioxide. Reduce uncontrolled outdoor-air entry during a severe pollution episode, but monitor heat and stuffiness. Ventilate when outdoor readings improve, then resume high-rate filtration.
What an air purifier cannot do
- remove the city's pollution source;
- replace ventilation or lower CO2;
- guarantee removal of every gaseous pollutant;
- clean an entire apartment equally through closed doors;
- replace medical advice for people with asthma, cardiovascular disease or other chronic conditions.
Is the MOUNTAIN AIR GL-K180 suitable?
The GL-K180 has a claimed CADR of up to 420 m³/h, HEPA H13, carbon layers and a PM2.5 sensor. Using the table above, that airflow is roughly equivalent to five air changes per hour in a 30 m² room with a 2.7 m ceiling, before allowing for leakage or filter loading. Match the model to the room where it will operate rather than the apartment's total area.
Frequently asked questions
Can an air purifier help with smog in Almaty?
With suitable capacity, closed windows and a serviceable filter, it can reduce PM2.5 in the selected room. It cannot remove every component of smog.
Can an air purifier run continuously?
If the model's manual permits continuous operation, filtration can run continuously or as much as practical. Choose the speed based on readings, noise and measured results.
Why can PM2.5 rise with the windows closed?
Particles enter through leaks and ventilation and are also generated indoors by frying, candles, smoking, aerosols and some cleaning activities.
Does an air purifier remove CO2?
No. Standard HEPA and carbon filters do not solve CO2 accumulation. Air exchange is still required when outdoor air is cleaner.
